Bike trail repair update

I received this message from Fred Heinz. Please contact your councilperson and/or Mark Rahm, City Engineer, to encourage completion of the disrupted section of the bike trail west of Eisenhower Avenue. I appreciate Fred's sharing of this information.

"The City of Mason City removed that section of trail in December of ’10, without notification to Cerro Gordo County, who holds the 28-E management agreement with all three government entities, (i.e. Mason City, Clear Lake & Cerro Gordo County).

At that time we informed them of the almost 20-year old agreement and suggested that safety of patrons would be an immediate concern, once weather conditions improved in the spring of ’11. I have been in contact with the city engineer since mid February of this year, requesting a timely completion of the repair work and the status has been posted via press releases through our agency as well as on our county web site.

To date the city of Mason City has attempted to have their contractor do some remedial site grading and staking in preparation for replacement of the trail section removed by them, but no further work has been completed since the first week in May. Unfortunately, since Cerro Gordo County has no control over the initial work done or remedial work needed, with the city of Mason City responsible for all the efforts, including repair we are at their mercy.

I did receive an email early last week that stated they were poised to place some material on the old trail bed to improve that surface and provide a safer alternative compared to the road shoulder, while waiting for asphalt paving conditions to improve (their wording). On my bike ride yesterday to Ventura & back I found that no further work has progressed on that effort either.

I have urged many others that have contacted our office regarding this issue to contact City Hall or their city elected officials in an attempt to express concern from the public, as well as from our agency (the trail managers) that this issue is paramount to users."

2nd Annual SMETICS Yule ride

Please join us at the SMETICS Indoor Cycling Class for our SECOND annual Yule Ride to collect gifts for a family in North Iowa. The Yule ride will take place on Tuesday, December 22nd, and will be a free ride for everyone who attends. Please wear any and all Christmas clothing you can find. Bring your gifts or donation, and we will wrap and prepare the items for delivery.

Class time: 6:00PM. Hunter will be leading, starting at that time, but come whenever you can. We have a lot of extra trainers; just bring your bike. Class is free for everyone.

Social: 7:00 pm. North Iowa Spin and MC2 will supply all the beverages and snacks for an enjoyable post-ride Christmas celebration. Join us just for the social if you'd like.

Location: SMETICS Indoor Cycling Class is located in the old HyVee East DrugTown, the same as two years ago. Enter through the old Allstate location. The door is marked with NISPIN signage

We'd like to see anyone and everyone join us (NITC, NI SPIN, MC2, NIBU and the Clear Lake spinners) on Tuesday night.

The family is being adopted through the Crisis Intervention Center. The family would be grateful for anything you have to offer. Ann from the Crisis Intervention Center said, “The family would appreciate anything. She cried when I told her why I was calling.”

Boy, age 10: Size 10/12 in shirts, size 10R in pants, size 5-6 in shoes. He is in need of shirts, socks, pjs and boots. He likes books, drawing, hot wheels, legos, and toy knights and horses. He'd like a sled.

Mom: Size M in shirts, size 10/12 in pants, size 6 in shoes. She could use anything for clothing. She is in need of bed pillows and some twin and full-size blankets. She likes books (Christian, self-help), Christian music, and candles (any scent).

A few people last year donated gift certificates, and that was very kind! Please bring gift wrap and essentials for wrapping, or you may pre-wrap the gifts.

See you on Tuesday, 12/22, at 6:00, 6:30, or 7:00PM. We'll have fun and celebrate the joy of giving!
